Touch Feedback in a Head-Mounted Display Virtual Reality through a Kinesthetic Haptic Device

چکیده
This paper presents the integration of a three degree-of-freedom (3-DOF) kinesthetic haptic device with a head-mounted display (HMD), using a virtual piano keyboard as a motivating application. The inertial sensors in the HMD allow the user to view the full set of keys without zooming out simply by turning his or her head to look up and down the keyboard. The haptic device further increases immersion into the virtual reality, allowing the user to reach out and touch the piano keys, feeling the dynamics of each keystroke and hearing the individual notes played. The large visual workspace afforded by the HMD exceeds the physicallylimited workspace of the haptic device, so a button clutch, workspace drift, and ballistic cursor control are each implemented as strategies to expand the reachable workspace without sacrificing tactile precision or haptic resolution.

Wearable Vibrotactile Haptic Device for Stiffness Discrimination during Virtual Interactions
In this paper, we discuss the development of cost effective, wireless, and wearable vibrotactile haptic device for stiffness perception during an interaction with virtual objects. Our experimental setup consists of haptic device with five vibrotactile actuators, virtual reality environment tailored in Unity 3D integrating the Oculus Rift Head Mounted Display (HMD) and the Leap Motion controller...
متن کاملHaptic Interfaces
In general the word " haptic " refers to the sense of touch. This sense is essentially twofold, including both cutaneous touch and kinesthetic touch. Cutaneous touch refers to the sensation of surface features and tactile perception and is usually conveyed through the skin. Kinesthetic touch sensations, which arise within the muscles and tendons, allow us to interpret where our limbs are in spa...
متن کاملFalcon City: An Integration of Novint Falcon in Virtual Reality
Haptic Devices enable various tactile feedback and allow users to interact with a virtual environment in a more immersive way. The current Virtual Reality (VR) interface in the market is largely comprised of devices designed for visual and auditory feedback, with Head Mounted Display (HMD) devices such as Oculus Rift leading the industry by providing significant visual immersion. However, there...
متن کاملDevelopment of a virtual laboratory for the study of complex human behavior
The study of human perception has evolved from examining simple tasks executed in reduced laboratory conditions to the examination of complex, real-world behaviors. Virtual environments represent the next evolutionary step by allowing full stimulus control and repeatability for human subjects, and a testbed for evaluating models of human behavior. Visual resolution varies dramatically across th...
متن کاملOrganic Shape Modelling through Haptic Devices
This paper presents a sketching system for 3D organic shapes modeling and animation using virtual reality devices. On the hardware side, it is based on the Haptic WorkstationTM which conveys force feedback on the user arms (upper body limbs), and a Head Mounted Display to present the 3D generated images. On the software side, we use implicit surfaces modelling techniques such as metaballs. In f...
